Why Pottery?
Here's an honest photo of what a corner of my studio looks like.
It's messy, but ordered.
It's full of my ideas and past attempts and sentimental achievements.
It's a space that is mine to work in, and mine to invite others into. It's mine to do battle in, and mine to retreat to..
When I was a child, I dreamed of having a studio like this, and being a person who would while away hours making something...because I wanted to make something.
About 40 years later, after walking wonderful paths that did not include a studio, or being an artist, I arrived here, in our family's basement, having bought the home without even realizing it would be my space.
Why pottery? Because one common thread in those 40 years has been my joy in connecting with others, and pottery is an art that connects. My hands form a ware and then it goes to live in someone else's hands as they drink coffee, or serve a dinner, or plant a succulent.
And soon after I learned enough to be able to say, "I am a potter," I realized an even greater joy: this art gives me a better understanding of The Potter. So I come here most days to try to make something beautiful, to enjoy the relationship of potter & clay..
How about you? What and where is your space, or time, or activity, or outlet to create something beautiful and offer it to the world?
