To make this plate, I used a doily my immigrant grandmother crocheted from a pattern of her own making while sitting home alone upon first arriving. The cotton thread will pass away, but her creativity is now here on planet earth.
She passed away before I became a potter. It is such an honor to use her work in my own--a collaboration she did not guess was coming, but one she (probably) would have been pleased about.
If you look closely, you'll see that her stitches are perfect. The doily lays flat perfectly. When I make pottery, I do not try for perfection. I aspire to excellence. I aspire to fine craftsmanship. But perfection? You can find that at the Dollar store...
And maybe this is my favorite part of our collaboration:
Her thing + my thing = a beautiful thing.
